  • The Concepts: Measurement

    When we teach Psychology, we spend hours helping students evaluate methodology, but we probably don’t inspect the consider the most basic and simple assumption: that the psychological phenomena we study (such as fera or anxiety) can actually be measured.

    Measurement is a delicate act of translation. We take squishy, subjective, or invisible/intangible behaviours and we try to translate them into reliable numbers which we can caluclate means with and make graphs from because these give our science some credibiltiy and objectivity. But how much gets lost in translation?

    Take physiological metrics. We routinely measure salivary cortisol levels to quantify stress. But cortisol is just a biochemical proxy for stress. It’s not the subjective experience of stress itself. We measure a biological trace and make a massive inferential leap about human suffering. Or consider basic behavioral tasks like the Stroop effect. When a researcher uses a handheld stopwatch to log reaction times, how accurate is that data? Recording a time down to hundredths of a second implies a level of precision that human reaction times on the stopwatch itself completely invalidate.

    This illusion of mathematical precision follows us into data analysis. When students calculate the mean and standard deviation of Likert scales or reaction times, we rarely ask them to consider what those trailing decimal points mean. Do accumulating decimals offer genuine insight into human behavior, or do they artificially distort the mean and create a false sense of scientific rigor?

    Even high-tech neuroimaging has its leaps of faith. Modern scanning machines like fMRIs calculate changes in hippocampal volume or cerebral blood flow, but the transformation from raw voxels to a 3D structural measurement relies on complex algorithms and statistical modeling that few non-specialists truly understand. We are measuring physical surrogates to infer cognitive processes.

    And that’s before we attempt to quantify the truly abstract: How do you measure ethics? How do you put a numerical value on love, grief, pain, or a child’s transition through Piaget’s stages?

    For us (the teachers), measurement’s not a dry topic tucked away in Research Methods; it’s the lens through which every topic in the syllabus should be viewed. Bringing these questions into the classroom lifts students from being passive watchers and listeners of psychology into critical thinkers who ask good questions like: Are we measuring what we think we are measuring, or just what is easy to count?


  • Paper 1, Section A: Score 4 marks in under 10 minutes

    Paper 1 Section A can make or break a student’s confidence in the IB Psychology exam. With two 4-mark questions covering the Biological, Cognitive, or Sociocultural approaches, students have a 10-minute window per question to think, write, and proofread.

    To help your students consistently hit the top mark band, they need a simple strategy that focuses purely on demonstrating understanding without wasting time. Here is the framework you can share with your class.

    Understanding the top markband descriptor

    According to the Subject Guide, achieving 3–4 marks requires meeting two criteria:

    • The response demonstrates detailed knowledge relevant to the question.
    • A relevant example is provided to show understanding.

    Describe & Explain

    The command terms for Paper 1 Section A’s two questions are Describe and Explain (one of each):

    • Describe: Give a detailed account of the essential characteristics of a concept. Some concepts have no proven cause, so the correct command term is simply describe. For example, a neuron, we can describe the essential characteristics , but we cannot state a cause.
    • Explain: Describe the essential characteristics and give reasons or causes. Some concepts can be explained because they have clear triggers or mechanisms. For example, neuroplasticity occurs due to specific causes such as recovery from a stroke, sports trauma, or normal human development.

    A Note on “Describe How”: You may have seen “Describe how…” in the IB’s Specimen paper. Accoridn to a very experienced workshop leader, “describe how” changes the command term. If ‘describe how’‘ were valid, we might as well expect ‘describe why’ or ‘describe who’! Stick strictly to teaching the official definitions of Describe and Explain.

    The 3-paragraph formula

    To stay under the 10-minute limit, students must not write fluff, lengthy introductions, conclusions, or linking sentences. Teach them to structure their response into three focused paragraphs:

    1. Paragraph 1: Define
      State a clear, accurate, and concise definition of the core psychological concept.
    2. Paragraph 2: Underlying mechanism (+ Causes if “Explain”)
      Describe the underlying psychological or biological mechanism in two to three sentences. If the prompt uses Explain, explicitly state the underlying reasons or causes.
    3. Paragraph 3: Relevant example
      Briefly describe a concrete, highly relevant example and explicitly link it back to the theory or mechanism. This should be integral to teaching all of the Biological, Cognitive and Sociocultural topics.

    Students should NOT outline a research study!

    While the December 2025 update to the Guide notes that students can outline a research study in Section A, instructing students to learn a study for every single content topic is inefficient and counterproductive.

    • Outlining a study does not demonstrate understanding. Summarizing a study’s aim, procedure, and result often leads to rote regurgitation rather than showing an understanding of the theory or topic. Studies serve as evidence to support a theory; they don;t show understanding.
    • Who can realistically write an outline of an empirical study alongside a definition and full explanation in just 10 minutes?

    So: Advise your students to describe a relevant and accurate example rather than a full study outline. It saves time, demonstrates genuine psychological insight, and directly satisfies the top-band mark scheme.
